New data from APSCo reveals that demand for skilled professionals (including Umbrella Company Employees) has risen again, with recruiters specialising in the professional jobs market now having 13% more vacancies on their books than at the same time last year.
The rise is consistent with findings from the National Institute for Economic and Social Research (NIESR), which revealed that economic growth accelerated in the UK in the three months to May. The latest APSCo data indicates that most of the trade association’s core sector groups, which coincide with the core specialisms of the UK’s professional contracting community of IT, engineering and finance & accounting, saw robust year-on-year growth.
Temporary/contracting vacancies remained resilient across the professional jobs market, rising by 2% across the board on last year’s total. Media and marketing saw especially vigorous growth, climbing year-on-year by 6%.
Commenting on the accompanying jump in salaries and pay rates, APSCo chief executive Ann Swain said that market confidence was now “soaring.” She added: “Organisations are scrambling to get their hands on the brightest talent, and those that can offer attractive remuneration packages stand a fighting chance. The CBI’s latest growth indicator found that economic expansion in the three months to May reached its strongest rate since the same month last year, and against this backdrop it is unsurprising that vacancies are up 13% during the same period.”
The rise in contract roles in the marketing and media sectors, Ms Swain added, was consistent with widespread reports of skills shortages within the sector. Consequently, she said, “smart contractors with the required skills are cashing in on this flurry of demand.”
