Demand for digital and tech contractors is growing in London after overall job vacancies surged by 6% in the capital last month, the latest Recruitment Index by specialist contract recruiter Venn Group shows.

More businesses are beginning to invest in ‘future proofing’ their tools and systems to boost productivity and efficiency, which has resulted in many sourcing more flexible workers to complete tech roles in the private sector.

Professionals are also being paid more as the economy grows at a faster pace than previously projected. IT service managers are now commanding more than £600 a day, while developers with PHP programming skills are taking home up to £350 a day in London.

Venn Group associate director Jodie Finn said: “Activity across commerce and industry remains high post-election, but June saw particular demand for senior IT specialists to implement systems fit to manage future growth.”

She added: “There has specifically been demand for IT service managers with solid experience in managing design, implementation and integration, and this is reflected in the rates that these professionals can command.”

Demand has also increased for online content editors, digital designers and professionals who are well versed in working cross-platform as companies begin to establish an online presence across social media and other platforms to keep up with changing user expectations.

The public sector is also sourcing more contractors for jobs, and finance managers, procurement consultants and administrators are among those benefiting. Overall there was a 4% rise in pay rates for contractors taking on new assignments in June, with freelancers now earning an average £278 per day.
